PRONOUN

Pronouns replace nouns. (Pronouns are usually short words.) I, you, he, she, it, we, they and who are all pronouns. As these pronouns often replace nouns representing people, they are called the 'personal pronouns'.

1-3 PRONOUN+ BE + NOUN
SINGULAR
PLURAL

PRONOUN
(I, you, she, he, it, we, they)

FORMS OF BE (am, is, are)
PRONOUN + BE + NOUN
a.  I                am    a student

b.  You          are    a student

c.   She           is      a student

d.  He             is      a student

e.  It               is      a student
PRONOUN + BE + NOUN
f.    We         are    students

g.  You        are    students

h.  They      are     students
i.    Nico is in my class. He is a student
j.    Dina is in my class. She is a student
k.   Nico and Dina are in my class. They are students
Pronouns refer to nouns
In (i): he (masculine) = Nico
In (j): she (feminine) = Dina
In (k): they = Nico and Dina

PERSONAL PRONOUNS CHANGE
Personal pronouns change depending on the role they place in the sentence. In general, this does not cause difficulties for native English speakers. The changes are:

I = me             he = him        she = her
we = us          they = them    who = whom

'You' and 'it' never change. The pronouns shown first above (like 'I' and 'he') are said to be in the 'subjective case'; whereas, the second versions (like 'me' and 'him') are said to be in the 'objective case'

EXERCISE : Complete the sentences. Use a VERB: am, is, or are. Use a NOUN: a student or students

  1. We                 are students               .
  2. I                                                     .
  3. Dina goes to school. She                                                            .
  4. Dina and Nico go to school. They                                                             .
  5. You (one person)                                                           .
  6. You (two person)                                                            .
